Artwork: The Pink Flag, Summer 2020

Artists: Performance Artists Unknown

Photography by Sharon Avraham (additional historic photography in the public domain).

The summer of 2020 will undoubtedly go down in the annals of Israeli history for two key events, the pandemic and the mass social/political protests that took the country by storm.

During one of the mass gatherings outside the Prime Minister’s residence in Jerusalem, a group of performance artists/activists recreated a seminal moment in Israeli history—the raising of the so-called “Ink flag” on the newly captured town of Un El Rash Rash, later to be named Eilat. Photographer Sharon Avraham captured this moment.

And Now You

  • What do you think is the connection between these two historic events? Why did the protesters choose to recreate this particular visual moment?
  • The color pink became one of the unofficial symbols of these protests, what is it about this color that was so evocative for the movement?
  • Do you think that protest is a valid, useful means of creating social or political change?
  • Do you have experience viewing performance art? If so, what are your thoughts on this relatively new, relatively controversial art form? Is it even art?
