Rabbi Gideon Sylvester directs the Rabbis for Human Rights Beit Midrash at the Hillel House of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and serves as the British United Synagogue’s Rabbi in Israel.

 

Is belly dancing kosher? How about New Year’s Eve parties?

For years, the Israeli rabbinate has waged wars against such activities, revoking the kashrut licenses of hotels and restaurants that offered them. This enrages those who feel that kashrut authorities should limit themselves to certifying food; others admire the holistic approach, which indicates that both the food and the ambience strictly conform to Jewish tradition.

This documentary film created by Paula Weiman-Kelman follows American Jews visiting Israel. The production approached Makom to write a guide. We focused on specific moments, certain people, particular comments, and draw questions from them. 

The guide is available in full, and also as placemats to put on tables in the local cafe after the screening, to allow for guided yet freely-managed conversations.

The meaning of the numbers

On Saturday night the Middle East witnessed another remarkable demonstration of the spirit of democracy.

Over 450,000 people, 6% of Israel’s entire population, were out demonstrating against government policy.

That’s the equivalent of almost 19 million marching throughout the USA, over 2 million in Canada, and nearly 4 million people walking peacefully in the streets of the UK.
