It is not a forgery, nor is it an example of the fringes of Palestinian society. It is handed out freely and proudly to anyone who would like a copy.

The poster refers to the 63 years of exile many Palestinians have experienced since the creation of the State of Israel. As all scholars acknowledge, whether by choice or by force, Palestinians lost their homes during the Israeli War of Independence in 1948.

The world, together with much of the world’s Jewry and segments of Israeli society, are urging Prime Minister Netanyahu to grant the Palestinians a state of their own. His response has tended to be in the conditional: A state can and should be granted to the Palestinians, just as long as Palestinians accept the existence of the Jewish state of Israel. Which includes sovereignty over cities like Haifa.

Come September, it is likely that the State of Palestine along 1967 borders will be announced.

Yet the city of Haifa was not conquered in the 1967 war. Nor was it even taken by Jewish forces in the 1948 War of Independence. Haifa was included in the original Partition Plan that the UN itself proposed in 1947, when establishing the Jewish State.

Are we still struggling to establish the fundamental legitimacy of a Jewish State in this land?
