Makom – The place for compelling Israel education.
Makom trains leaders and creates educational content to embrace the vibrant complexity of Israel: The People and the Place.
Non-partisan yet passionate, our expert team offers a cutting-edge approach to rich, meaningful, experiential Israel education. We empower educators, rabbis, activists, arts and community leaders to articulate a compelling vision, and provide the tools to make it happen in practice. The content we create for leaders enables them to craft honest programming that sparks and forges Jewish commitment.
Makom has developed over 700 educational units available here on our state-of-the-art interactive website. As of late 2011, we have delivered training and enrichment seminars for 12,000 educators, and consulted for 140 leaders, institutions, and communities.
Our mission is to realize the untapped potential of Israel and Jewish Peoplehood in our lives.
Makom is an initiative of the Jewish Agency for Israel.
Makom is very grateful to our generous sponsors who have supported our work over the last five years: Jewish Agency for Israel; Keren HaYesod; UJA-Federation of New York; the UJA-Federation of Greater Toronto; Jewish Federation of Greater Washington; Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties; Jewish Federation of St. Louis; Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh; the UJC Metro West New Jersey; Greater Miami Jewish Federation; the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County; Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia; Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey; and the Avi Chai Foundation.
Makom was established in 2006 as a partnership between the Jewish Agency for Israel and twelve Jewish Community Federations in North America. Together they recognized that traditional Israel education had neither adapted to a complex unfolding Israel, nor to emerging Jewish identities. Young adults in particular were losing touch with Israel and Jewish Peoplehood.
Makom began to operate as something of a “government-funded underground”, working within established structures in unorthodox ways. Makom proceeded to advocate for an alternative paradigm of Israel engagement, to cultivate leadership to implement new approaches, and to generate cutting-edge materials for their use.
Since then Makom’s call for complexity when engaging young adults with Israel – “Hugging and Wrestling” – has become the catchphrase of initiatives throughout the Jewish world. Many Jewish institutions have undergone transformations in their Israel engagement strategies, and the online materials available at makomisrael.org are a treasure chest of deep innovative Israel programming.
Makom offers strategic consultation to organizations and communities, and runs workshops and seminars on Israeli arts and culture, Israel in the Synagogue, Thinking Jewish Peoplehood, Working with Controversy, Reimagining Yom Ha’atzmaut, and much more. See Workshops and Seminars.
Makom now also works in France, Hungary, Israel, and UK.
